Many adults who struggle in life cannot pinpoint any specific negative events or challenges that could shed the light on their ongoing difficulties. Yet, life seems to require so much more effort from them than it appears to require from other people. They often asked questions such as:
What is wrong with me?
Why am I not like other people?
Why do I constantly feel that I am doing something wrong?
Why do I feel like an outsider?
Why am I so tired/anxious/irritable all the time?
Why do I feel like I want to take a break from life?
Perhaps social situations leave them unusually exhausted. Perhaps everyday noise, light, touch or competing demands can become overwhelming. Perhaps they spend considerable energy working out what other people seem to understand intuitively. They may have become very good at adapting to different situations, while privately experiencing a great amount of exhaustion, anxiety or irritability.
For some people, the possibility of autism provides a new way of making sense of these experiences.
This does not mean that every experience of anxiety, sensitivity, social difficulty or overwhelm is a sign of autism. Nor does considering autism mean that previous diagnoses or psychological understandings were necessarily wrong. But for some people, exploring the possibility of being autistic can bring together aspects of their history that have previously seemed unrelated.
The understanding of autism has changed dramatically in recent years: from a relatively narrow, stereotype-driven concept to the broader autism spectrum disorder (ASD) framework. As a consequence, people who were previously overlooked (particularly those with subtler traits, girls and women, people with strong language or intellectual abilities, and adults who learned to mask their difficulties) are now more likely to be identified as autistic.
Below is the list of questions that illustrate experiences of daily challenges for many autistic people. If they ring true for you, perhaps it is worth exploring the possibility that you are a neurodivergent individual trying to live according to neurotypical standards.
